Q: What is schutzhund?
A: Schutzhund is a competition tailored to German shepherd dogs, but also sees other dog breeds in the competition ring. There are three phases to Schutzhund.. Tracking, Obedience & Protection. There are also three levels.. SchHI, SchHII, and SchHIII. All dogs must start at the BH level. The BH level is a temperment test for any aged dog. (meaning, a 6 year old can still take this test.) There are age requirements for each level, but the age requirement is the minimum age. Regardless of age, all dogs start at the BH title.
Q: How does my dog achieve titles?
A: This depends on each discipline... In Schutzhund your dog has to receive a minimal point score in all three phases of each level to pass onto the next. There are great links on each sport to help you better understand the leveling up process
Q: At what age can my dog start competing in Schutzhund?
A: For each level of Sch your dog has to be a minimum age.
B(BH) - 15 months old
FH - 16 months
AD - 16 months
SchH/IPO I - 18 months
SchH/IPO II - 18 months
SchH/IPO III - 20 months
FHI- 16 months
FHII - 16 months
Q:What does each phase consist of in Schutzhund?
A: The B (or BH) title stands for "Begleithunde", or Companion dog. Before any test the dog is put through a temperament test. Identity is verified. If a dog does not pass the temperament test, they are prohibited from continuing with the rest of the test. Section one is basic commands, heel on leash, heel off leash, long down under distraction etc. The second phase is the Test in Traffic. In this phase, there are no points awarded for individual tasks completed, like there are in the other sections. In order to pass this section "the total impression of the dog as it moves through traffic/the public is relevant"
Order of Procedures:
Encounter with a group of people.
Encounter With Automobiles
Encounter with Joggers or Inline skaters
Encounter with Other Dogs
Behavior of the dog when tied out breifly and left alone; behavior with regards to animals.
SchI-III & IPOI-III consists of three phases. Obedience, Tracking & Protection. Each of the three phases can earn a total of 100 points. Obedience & Tracking have to score a 70 or higher to pass, and Protection must earn an 80 or higher. If a dog does not pass one phase of the trial, then they do not pass that level, and must repeat it until they earn a passing score.
Q: How Long does My Dog have to wait between levels?
A: If you are repeating a level, there is no need to wait between tests, regardless of whether it passed or failed.
If your dog Fails their BH, there is no wait time between tests.
If your dog passes the BH, they can immediately take their SchHI or IPOI.
There is a waiting period of two weeks between SchHI, SchHII, SchHIII, FH & FHII.
Q:What's IPO?
A: IPO is basically just an international version of SchH run by the FCI... SchH is run by the SV in Germany,
Q: My dog earned his SchHII, can he try for his IPOIII?
A: No... IPO and SchH are run independent of one another... in both cases your dog has to start off at BH. (bh is used for both systems)
Q:I've looked around and can't find a point system for PDN... is there one?
A: No, there is not a point system for PDN. There are individual Schutzhund points, but you never see what your dog's total score was, just whether or not they passed.
Q: What is "French Ring"?
A: French Ring is a French Originated sport where dogs compete in a manner very similar to Schutzhund. To get a better understanding of the sport, take a look at the 'helpful Links" Post.
Q: What is PDC?
A: PDC stands for "Protection Dog Certificate." In the "helpful links" board there is a great site that explains in depth each phase of Protection dog certs and training.
Q: I have a _____ dog... can they compete in any of these classes?
A: It all depends on what class you want to enter them in, and what kind of dog it is.... Size is a major factor, as with most of the classes, there are some big hurdles, that a Chihuahua just isn't going to be able to take. The most popular Protection type dogs are German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherds (malinois, Tervuren, sheepdog ,etc), Dobermans, Rottweilers, Bovier des Flandres, Pittbulls, bulldogs... the list goes on and on. Some sports were tailored specifically for a particular breed, like Schutzhund is tailored to the GSD. But these sports are open to any dog who can pass the requirements.
Q:In the Schutzhund Class list there is a title for WH? Whats this??
A: WH stands for Watch Dog... There is also a link to all the titles and abbreviations in the helpful links board.
Q: My dog earned their ___ title on another board, do they still have to start out on the lowest level on PDN?
A: Of course not! Your dog's skills carry over from whatever other board you've been competing them on... However, i would like to see proof that the dog has earned said title by their show results. Otherwise I'll simply assume that they haven't been competing, and are cheating if they start out at SchHIII for instance. If this happens, the dog will either be DQ-d from their class, and will be required to start out at the beginning.
Q: How do I get my dog Narc/cadaver/bomb Certified?
A Once a month a certification course will be held for these, When they are posted for entries, there will instructions and guidelines for each certification.
Q: Is there a waiting period between certifications if my dog fails?
A: There is a 30 day waiting period between retaking certs. I will not be holding them anymore than once every 30 days, so don't worry too much about whether or not your dog is eligible.
Q:When are Certifications done?
A: These will be held once a month, usually within the first week of the month.
Q: What kind of dogs can go for their certifications?
A: Most working type dogs can go for their certifications... The certs that also focuz on detection, or tracking, can be given to hounds... Almost any dog can certify if they have the drive and motivation to find whatever their trained for.
