Narcotics Certification:
Scenario: 2 small packets of Marijuana have been placed, one 15 grams, the other 35 grams. The first packet was hidden in an old warehouse, filled with boxes and crates of food, to serve as distractions. The packet itself was placed about 5' off the ground on a shelf where crates were stacked. The second in an automobile, hidden in the spare tire.
Two packets of Cocaine were placed, the first packet containing 20 grams, the second containing 30. The first packet was hidden in a side building, away from the warehouse. The packet itself was hidden in the tank of a toilet, ducktaped to the side. The second was hidden in another, seperate car than was used for the Marijuana. This was was hidden beneath the driver's side seat. In addition, there is a seperate room that the dogs must search which contains no narcotics. In addition, there will be a third car which is blank and has no hidden narcotics.
Handlers must make judges aware of any alerts that the dogs give, whether its a sit, a down, a paw, a bark, ect. Each Location will have a 15 minute time limit. Handlers and dogs may take a 15 minute break between each search.
Successful pass: All four scents located within the alloted time.
Contestants:
Maverick Handled by Blitzkrieg Kennels
Jago v.d. Weyermulher handled by Berkshire East
Sterling's Saer Handled by EAK
Results:
Maverick, handled by Blizkrieg Kennels took his time finding the first 15 gram packet of marijuana, the 15 minutes expired, but he was allowed to continue the search until he'd found the hit. He was not entirely alert and seemed more interested in what was in the crates and boxes than in the task at hand. The First packet of Cocaine was located within 10 minutes with an alert of a "sit." The dog seemed very alert and attentive to his handler during this phase. The outdoor phase went much more quickly, and Maverick was able to identify each narcotic within the alloted time. He was rewarded after each find by his handler and in high spirits. Maverick DID NOT pass, due to failing to find the first placement within 15 minutes. Maverick is eligible for his next certification test in February.
Jago v.d. Weyermulher, handled by Berkshire East was enthusiastic and covered the crates well, needing only a little guidence from his handler. He took 9 minutes to find the first placement. The Toilet tank placement took the most time with this boy, but he manged to find it before the 15 minutes had lapsed. The Vehicle searches seemd to puzzle Jago more, and he barely skated by under 15 minutes. Jago has PASSED this certification.
Sterling's Saer, Handled by EAK did very well for the indoor segments. Handler and dog worked both rooms systematically and were able to find each drop under the time limit. The outdoor segments proved a little more challenging, and Saer failed to find the Marijuana drop within the allotted time. The team was allowed to finish the search and found the bag at 18 minutes. The cocain was found a bi tmore quickly, but jus skirted under the allotted time frame. Saer will need more work on outdoor searches.
Explosive Certification:
Scenario: The dogs will be required to find 3 drops. the first will be TNT, the second water Gel and the third Primer cord. There will be 5 different rooms, or scenarios to search. The dogs will have a limit of 15 minutes for each search. The first drop will be in a railcar, with the TNT placed about 6' from the bottom of the car, in a luggage container. the second explosive (primer cord) will be placed 6 inches under ground in an open field with "false" spots through the field. The last drop will be in a cluttered building with multiple obstacles, and height differences.
